Breathwork in San Diego: train your nervous system like you train your body
You breathe about twenty thousand times a day without thinking about it. Breathwork is the hour where you do think about it, with a trained facilitator beside you, in a quiet room, with nowhere else to be.
At Saffron & Sage, breathwork is a private session, not a crowded class. Your facilitator watches how you breathe now, guides you into a steady, connected rhythm and keeps the pace somewhere you feel safe. Because we are an integrative clinic, your breathwork can sit alongside acupuncture, massage or care from our doctors instead of standing alone.

Box breathing, explained →What is breathwork?

Breathwork is the practice of changing how you breathe, on purpose, for a set period of time, with attention on what you notice in your body and mind while you do it.
There are many styles. Some are slow and calming, like box breathing or a long, easy exhale. Others are fuller and more active. The style we use most in private sessions is conscious connected breathing: a full, open inhale that flows into a relaxed exhale with no pause between, repeated in a steady loop while you rest. Your facilitator starts by watching your natural pattern, then guides you into the rhythm and adjusts the pace as you go.
We don’t make promises about results. People describe the experience in many ways, from calm and quiet to emotional or energized, and every session is different. Your facilitator will be straight with you about what breathwork is and isn’t, and will suggest a visit with one of our clinicians if something should be looked at first.
How breathwork fits into integrative care here
At Saffron & Sage, breathwork is one part of a larger plan. Members can pair it with acupuncture, massage, meditation and sound or energy therapy, and our team can see what else is in your care so sessions build on each other.
Some people come for a single session when life feels heavy. Others book breathwork every few weeks as part of how they look after themselves. Either way, you leave with a simple practice to try at home and a suggestion for what could come next, not a package you have to buy.

What breathwork feels like, and how we keep it safe
You lie on a comfortable mat or table, fully clothed, with a blanket and an eye pillow if you like. Your facilitator talks you through the breath and stays with you the whole time. You can slow down, pause or open your eyes whenever you want. There is no right way to feel.
During active breathwork, people commonly notice tingling in the hands or face, warmth, lightheadedness, a wave of emotion, or simply deep stillness. These sensations usually pass quickly once the breath returns to normal. Your facilitator watches for them and can guide you back to a slower rhythm at any point.
Prefer something gentler?
If active breathing isn’t right for you, ask about:
- Slow, calming breath patterns with a longer exhale
- Trauma-informed breathwork, where you set the pace
- Breath-focused guided meditation
- A breathwork session paired with sound or rest
Your first breathwork appointment, step by step
- Before you arrive. Eat lightly an hour or two ahead, wear soft, comfortable clothes and plan to arrive about 10 minutes early for your first visit.
- Intake. Your facilitator asks about your health history, pregnancy, medications, anything you are going through and what you would like from the session.
- Learning the breath. You practice the rhythm together sitting up first, so you know how it feels before you lie down.
- The session. You rest while your facilitator guides the breath, often with music, and checks in on you throughout. The breathing portion is followed by quiet rest.
- After. There is time to sit up slowly, drink water and talk through anything that came up. You leave with a short practice to try at home.
- How often. Some people come once. Others book every two to four weeks during a demanding stretch. You decide.

Breathwork FAQs
What is breathwork?
Breathwork is the practice of changing how you breathe, on purpose, for a set period of time. In our private sessions we mostly use conscious connected breathing, a steady, open rhythm with no pause between inhale and exhale, guided by a trained facilitator.
How much does breathwork cost in San Diego at Saffron & Sage?
New patients can book a first visit and consultation together for $300, normally $600, or a first appointment for $250, normally $300. After that, members use monthly credits. Private breathwork uses one non-medical credit.
What does breathwork feel like?
It is different for everyone. Many people notice tingling in the hands or face, warmth, lightheadedness, emotion, or a deep sense of stillness. These sensations usually settle quickly once you return to normal breathing, and you can slow down at any time.
Is breathwork safe?
For most healthy adults, guided breathwork is well tolerated. Active breathwork is not right for everyone. Tell us at intake if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, high blood pressure, epilepsy or a history of seizures, glaucoma or a detached retina, recent surgery, a history of psychosis or severe panic attacks, or if you take medications that affect breathing. We may suggest a gentler practice or ask you to check with your doctor first.
Can I cry or get emotional during breathwork?
Yes, and that is completely normal. Some people cry, laugh or feel a wave of emotion; others feel very little. Your facilitator stays with you and there is time afterward to talk, rest and settle before you leave.
How long is a breathwork session?
Plan for about an hour: around 5 minutes of intake and grounding, 45 minutes of guided breath with music playing throughout, and a 5 minute debrief.
How often should I do breathwork?
Some people come once when life feels heavy. Others book every two to four weeks during a demanding stretch and practice a few minutes at home in between. Your facilitator will make a suggestion, and you decide.
What should I wear to breathwork?
Soft, comfortable clothes you can lie down in. You stay fully clothed, and we provide a mat, blanket and eye pillow.
Should I eat before breathwork?
Eat something light an hour or two before. A very full stomach can make deep breathing uncomfortable, and an empty one can leave you lightheaded.
Is trauma-informed breathwork a replacement for therapy?
No. Trauma-informed breathwork is a gentle, consent-based practice, not psychotherapy. If you want support from a licensed therapist, our team can talk with you about psychotherapy at Saffron & Sage.
Breathwork vs meditation: what’s the difference?
Meditation usually lets the breath be natural while you rest your attention. Breathwork changes the breath on purpose and uses that as the focus. Many people enjoy both, and our meditative therapy sessions include breath-focused meditation.
Can I pay for breathwork with HSA or FSA?
We’re a direct pay clinic and don’t bill insurance. HSA, FSA and LSA dollars may be used for some services, especially when a provider recommends them. Check eligibility with your plan administrator.
Do I need to be a member?
No. You can always book à la carte. Membership unlocks preferred pricing, member-only offers and events, and other perks.
Where are you located?
2555 State St, San Diego, CA 92101, just north of Little Italy. Street parking is usually easy to find.
