The basics

What is somatic therapy?

"Soma" means body. Somatic therapies use the body as a doorway to the mind. Instead of starting with your thoughts, they start with what you feel: tension, a held breath, a racing heart, a sense of shutting down.

Researchers and clinicians, including Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, and Dr. Gabor Maté, have described how unresolved stress and trauma can stay stored in the body and shape how we feel and respond every day. Somatic care helps your nervous system move out of fight, flight or freeze, so the experiences behind those patterns can be processed and integrated.

Acupuncture

Trauma-informed Acupuncture calms the nervous system, eases the physical patterns stress leaves behind, such as tight shoulders, poor sleep and digestive upset, and helps you feel at home in your body again.

Trauma-Informed Breathwork

Breathwork

Guided breathing shifts your nervous system out of survival mode and helps you feel and release emotions held in the body, at a pace that feels safe.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy gently accesses the subconscious, where many memories and beliefs are stored, so they can be understood and integrated. Your first Hypnotherapy session is a 2-hour session with a deep intake.

Part of The Saffron Method®

Working with the spirit

The Saffron Method® looks for root causes in three places: thoughts (mind), toxicity (body) and trauma (spirit). Somatic therapies are how we work with the third, and we treat all three together.

Your somatic sessions are coordinated with the rest of your care team, including Psychotherapy and Trauma Therapy when needed, so each session builds on the last.

Questions

Somatic therapy FAQs

What is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that works with the nervous system and physical sensations to help release stress and integrate difficult experiences.

Is somatic therapy good for trauma?

Many people use somatic approaches as part of trauma care because trauma can be held in the body as well as the mind. At Saffron & Sage, somatic therapies are coordinated with Psychotherapy and Trauma Therapy when that's right for you.

Which somatic therapies do you offer?

Acupuncture, Breathwork and Hypnotherapy, plus Somatic Bodywork and Somatic Coaching.

Do I have to talk about my trauma?

No. Somatic work can begin with the body and the breath. You share only what feels right.

Is this the same as psychotherapy?

No. Somatic therapies work through the body. If you'd also like talk therapy, our Psychotherapist offers individual therapy and Trauma Therapy, and your care team coordinates both.

How do I get started?
