How to Get Your Custom Herbal Formula
Herbal prescriptions are filled in-house through three pathways:
After your Acupuncture session — your Acupuncturist can prescribe a formula to extend the benefits of treatment between visits.
Through a Botanical Medicine consultation — meet one-on-one with a Clinical Herbalist, in person or virtually, for a fully customized formula.
As part of your Holistic Healthcare Plan — herbal consultations are built into your ongoing care plan.
Herbal formulas are purchased separately from your appointment.
Custom Chinese Herbal Formulas
Our formulas are made of granular herbs and herbal extract powders that are finely ground and dissolve easily in water. Herbs are blended to enhance the potency of each one and their synergistic properties, nourishing and protecting the organ systems while supporting their function. Every formula is designed bio-individually by our Clinical Herbalists.
Formulas are available in 1-week, 2-week or 1-month supplies and are refilled every 2–4 weeks, depending on the duration of your prescribed formula, so your herbs evolve as your body responds.
Feeling Under the Weather? Members Can Call In
Members who are sick can call in for a 15-minute phone consultation with our Doctor and Clinical Herbalist. If herbs are recommended, a formula can be prescribed from that call. Call (619) 933-2340.

Do I need an appointment to get Chinese herbs?
Yes. Every formula is prescribed after an Acupuncture session, a Botanical Medicine consultation, or within your Holistic Healthcare Plan.
Can I have a consultation virtually?
Yes, Botanical Medicine consultations are offered in person or virtually.
How do refills work?
Refills are done every 2–4 weeks, depending on the duration of your prescribed formula. Your Clinical Herbalist may adjust your formula at each refill.
Is there a cost for herbal formulas?
Yes. Herbal formulas are purchased separately from your consultation or treatment.
What if I'm sick and need herbs quickly?
Members can call in for a 15-minute phone consultation with our Doctor and Clinical Herbalist.
Can I use HSA or FSA dollars?
Yes. Saffron & Sage accepts HSA, FSA and LSA dollars. We are a direct-pay clinic and do not accept insurance.

Our curated collection of herbal teas have been uniquely blended to support the rhythms of the month and year. We offer 4 seasonal teas as well as New and Full moon teas that directly relate to the changes in a woman's cycle. All teas are organically or biodynamically grown. Every blend is crafted in small batches under the direction of Dr. Scott McFarlane, Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
These cycles are based upon the earth's relationship to the sun and moon. The sun represents the masculine and the moon represents the feminine.
The sun and moon align with earth. As the moon pulls the tides in the oceans, it also pulls upon the subtle bodies of water, causing moisture to rise in the surface, which encourages germination and growth, fertility and fullness.
FLOWER ESSENCES:
Flower essences transmit essential vibration and wisdom of the flowers. They are premier medicinals for the soul and emotions. Gentle yet powerful plant allies for every stage of healing. Our flower essences are formulated for specific emotional imbalances to calm the mind and soothe the spirit.
Flower essences are vibrational imprints of the flower from a variety of plants that have been extracted and diluted in a unique blend of water and alcohol. Each flower essence is selected to create a custom formula that will support that patient in their current emotional state.
Our flower essences come in a month supply and are refilled monthly based upon the changes that occur in the emotional body and the patients current needs.
