Movement Therapy · San Diego

Movement Therapy in San Diego, built around the body you actually have

Group classes move at the pace of the room. If you are coming back from time off, working around a stiff back, or just want someone to teach you how to move well, a private session changes everything: the whole hour is about you.

At Saffron & Sage, Movement Therapy is private, personalized work that blends Yoga, dynamic stretching, breath and strength training. Your practitioner works in the same clinic as our Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists and Doctors, so your sessions can fit around the rest of your care.

Every Movement Therapy session at Saffron & Sage is private and one-on-one. We don’t run group classes for these services.

Why patients book

Why our patients book Movement Therapy

These are the reasons we hear most from people across San Diego, from Little Italy and Downtown to Bankers Hill, North Park and Point Loma. Your practitioner will ask what is going on and shape the session around it.

The basics

What is Movement Therapy?

Movement Therapy is private, guided movement that combines Yoga, dynamic stretching, breath and strength work. Each session is shaped around your body, your history and what you want to be able to do.

Think of it as the space between a group Yoga class and a gym session with a trainer. Your practitioner watches how you move, adjusts the pace and the poses, and teaches you why each piece is there. Some sessions are slow and restorative. Others are strong and sweaty. Most sit somewhere in between.

We don’t make promises about results. Your practitioner will be straight with you about what movement can reasonably help with, and when something else, like a visit with one of our Doctors or a referral to a physical therapist, should come first.

How Movement Therapy fits into integrative care here

At Saffron & Sage, movement isn’t a stand-alone class pass. Your practitioner can see the rest of your plan and coordinate with your Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist or Naturopathic Doctor, so what you do on the mat builds on the rest of your care.

Many patients pair Movement Therapy with Massage, Acupuncture or Fire Cupping. Others come for movement alone. Either way, you leave with a few things to practice at home and a suggestion for what to do next, not a package you have to buy.

What it feels like

What to expect, and how we pace it

You don’t need to be flexible, fit or experienced. The first session is mostly about getting to know how you move: what feels easy, what feels tight, and what you want to work toward. Everything is scaled to you, and you can ask to slow down, skip a pose or try something harder at any point.

Movement should feel like effort, not pain. If something pinches or hurts, say so and your practitioner will change it. Afterward you may feel loose, calm or pleasantly tired. Drink water and notice how your body feels the next day, so you can tell us next time.

Prefer something gentler?

If a strong session isn’t for you, ask about:

  • Restorative Yoga (supported, slow, very little effort)
  • Yin Yoga (long, quiet holds)
  • Gentle Flow (easy pace, lots of breath)
  • Stretch Therapy, where your practitioner guides and assists

Questions

Movement Therapy FAQs

Are Movement Therapy sessions private or group classes?

Every session is private and one-on-one. Custom Yoga, Yoga Therapy and Stretch Therapy take place at our clinic at 2555 State St. Personal Training is with Corey Butts, either at our clinic or at Bmorfit, a boutique training space at 350 Camino De La Reina in Mission Valley. How much does Movement Therapy cost in San Diego at Saffron & Sage?

At Saffron & Sage, Movement Therapy is paid for with non-medical credits. New patients can book a first appointment for $250 (normally $300) or a first appointment and consultation for $300 (normally $600). After that, book online and pay at checkout, or save with a monthly plan from $275 a month. HSA, FSA and LSA dollars are welcome.

What is the difference between Movement Therapy and a Yoga class?

A class moves at the pace of the room. Movement Therapy is private: your practitioner builds the session around your body, watches your form and adjusts as you go. Many people use private sessions to learn the basics, then join classes with more confidence.

Do I need to be flexible or fit to start?

No. Sessions are scaled to where you are today. Many people start because they feel stiff, out of practice or unsure where to begin.

Is Movement Therapy the same as physical therapy?

No. Physical therapy is licensed rehabilitation after injury or surgery, often prescribed by a Doctor. Movement Therapy is guided Yoga, stretching and strength work. If you are recovering from an injury or surgery, check with your Doctor or physical therapist first, and tell us so we can work around it.

Does Movement Therapy hurt?

It shouldn’t. You should feel effort and stretch, not sharp pain. If anything pinches or hurts, say so and your practitioner will change it.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can stretch in, like leggings or shorts and a fitted top. Most people practice barefoot. We provide mats and props.

How often should I do Movement Therapy?

Many people come weekly while they build a habit, then every few weeks to check form and progress their practice. Your practitioner will make a suggestion, and you decide.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Many people keep moving through pregnancy, with changes to the poses and pace. Check with your OB or midwife first, and tell us at booking so your practitioner can plan the session around this stage.

Can I do Movement Therapy with back or neck pain?

Many people come in with ongoing stiffness or discomfort. Tell us at intake, and your practitioner will keep the session within a comfortable range. If pain is new, severe, or comes with numbness or weakness, see a Doctor first; our medical team can help.

Should I book Movement Therapy or Massage?

Many patients do both. Massage works on your body while you rest; movement teaches you to use it differently day to day. Our team can help you choose on a free discovery call.

Is Movement Therapy covered by insurance or HSA?

We accept HSA, FSA, HRA and LSA funds. Your plan administrator decides which services are eligible, so please check with your plan. We are direct pay and do not bill insurance; superbills are available on request.

Do I need to be a member?

No. Anyone can book Movement Therapy online and pay at checkout. Membership unlocks preferred pricing, member-only offers and events, and other perks.

Where are you located?

2555 State Street, Suite 101, San Diego, CA 92101, just north of Little Italy. The entrance is on West Maple Street. Call (619) 933-2340.
