Peak Performance Acupuncture: Recovery, Focus and Resilience for Athletes and High Performers
Author: Dr. Scott McFarlane, Director of Clinical Excellence, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
Performance is not only built in training. It is built in recovery.
Athletes know this. So do surgeons, founders, attorneys, parents and anyone else who runs at a high level for long stretches. You push, you adapt, and if you do not recover well, you eventually plateau, get hurt or burn out.
Peak performance acupuncture is designed for people who want to keep showing up at their best, in sport and in life.
Who It Is For
We see a wide range of high performers, including:
Runners, cyclists, surfers, lifters and endurance athletes
Weekend warriors and active adults
Executives and professionals under sustained pressure
Performers and creatives preparing for big moments
Anyone returning to training after an injury, once cleared by their provider
How Acupuncture Supports Performance
Research on acupuncture and athletic performance is still developing, so we focus on the areas where it is most useful: recovery, pain, sleep and the stress response. Acupuncture may help:
Ease muscle soreness and tightness after hard training
Release trigger points and restore range of motion
Support circulation to overworked tissue
Shift the nervous system out of constant fight-or-flight
Improve sleep quality, the foundation of recovery
Support focus and calm before competition or high-stakes work
Recovery Is a Nervous System Skill
The body cannot repair and adapt while it is stuck in a stress response. Training, work deadlines, poor sleep and travel all add to the same load. Acupuncture is one of the tools we rely on most to help the body downshift into rest-and-repair mode, which is where adaptation actually happens.

What a Peak Performance Session Includes
Your Doctor of Acupuncture will ask about your training or workload, your goals, any injuries, and how you are sleeping and recovering. Your session may combine:
Acupuncture for recovery and the nervous system
Orthopedic and trigger point acupuncture for specific muscles and joints
Fire cupping to release fascia and support circulation
Gua sha for tight, overworked areas
Recommendations on recovery, sleep and herbal support if applicable
Timing Your Sessions
Many athletes find a regular rhythm works best: weekly during heavy training blocks, after key races or events, and as needed when something flares. Before competition, we generally keep treatments gentle and avoid trying anything new in the final days. Your practitioner will help you plan around your calendar.
Going Further With Integrative Care
Performance is about more than muscles. Our collaborative care model means you can also work with our Naturopathic Doctors and other Licensed Providers on labs, biomarkers, nutrition and recovery, so you get a full picture of what is helping and what is holding you back.
