Scalp Acupuncture: What It Is and Who It Can Help
Author: Dr. Scott McFarlane, Director of Clinical Excellence, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
Scalp acupuncture is one of the most specialized techniques in modern Chinese Medicine, and one of the least understood.
Most people picture acupuncture with needles in the back, arms or legs. Scalp acupuncture works differently. It focuses on specific zones of the scalp that correspond to areas of the brain, and it is often used when the nervous system itself is the focus of care.
Where Scalp Acupuncture Comes From
Scalp acupuncture builds on traditional points on the head, but its modern forms were developed in China starting in the 1970s by practitioners who combined Chinese Medicine with what was then known about brain anatomy. Several systems are used today. Each maps the scalp into treatment zones linked to functions such as movement, sensation, speech, balance and emotional regulation.
How It Works
Very fine needles are placed just under the skin of the scalp, usually along specific lines or zones, and are often left in place while you rest. Some practitioners add gentle stimulation or ask you to move or breathe in specific ways during treatment.
Research suggests scalp acupuncture may influence blood flow and activity in the brain and support the nervous system's ability to adapt. Most of the research has focused on stroke rehabilitation, where it is often used alongside physical and occupational therapy.
Who Scalp Acupuncture Can Help
Scalp acupuncture is commonly used as supportive care for:
Recovery after stroke, alongside rehabilitation
Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and neuropathy
Balance, dizziness and coordination concerns
Headaches and migraines
Brain fog, focus and cognitive support
Sleep, anxiety and nervous system regulation
Recovery after concussion, once cleared by your medical provider
Scalp acupuncture is supportive care and does not replace neurological treatment. We are always happy to coordinate with your neurologist, rehab team or primary care provider. You can read more in our articles on acupuncture and stroke recovery and acupuncture for Parkinson’s symptoms.
Scalp Acupuncture vs. Scalp Microneedling
These two are easy to confuse. Scalp acupuncture is a medical acupuncture technique focused on the nervous system. Scalp microneedling is a skin and hair treatment focused on the scalp itself. If hair growth is your goal, read our guide to scalp microneedling.
What a Session Looks Like
Your Doctor of Acupuncture will review your history, current treatments and goals, and may ask about your medical diagnosis and any recent imaging. Most sessions combine scalp acupuncture with points on the body. Needles on the scalp are very fine and usually feel like a light tap or a mild pressure, and many patients find the treatment deeply calming.
Because the nervous system adapts gradually, scalp acupuncture is often most helpful as a series of sessions. Your practitioner will recommend a plan based on your goals and adjust it as you progress.
