Acupuncture for Immunity and Travel: Staying Well Before, During and After a Trip

Author: Dr. Scott McFarlane, Director of Clinical Excellence, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

You plan the itinerary, pack the bag and book the flight. Then you land exhausted, off schedule and fighting a scratchy throat.

Travel and seasonal changes both put real pressure on the body. Disrupted sleep, long flights, crowded airports, new time zones, different food and the stress of getting everything done before you leave all add up. For many people, that is exactly when they get sick.

Acupuncture offers a simple way to support your body before, during and after the moments that tend to wear it down.

How Stress Affects Immunity

Your immune system and your stress response are closely connected. Short bursts of stress are manageable, but when stress and poor sleep stretch on, the body becomes less effective at defending itself and recovering. You can read more in our article on how chronic stress affects immunity.

How Acupuncture Supports Immunity

Research on acupuncture and immune function is still emerging. Studies suggest acupuncture may influence immune signaling and inflammation, and it can support the things that matter most for resilience:

  • Calming the stress response

  • Improving sleep quality

  • Supporting digestion, where much of the immune system lives

  • Easing congestion, sinus pressure and seasonal allergies

In Chinese Medicine, this is often described as strengthening your wei qi, or defensive energy. Seasonal tune-ups in fall and spring, when colds and allergies tend to peak, are a simple way to stay ahead of the season.

Before You Travel

A session a few days before a big trip can help you leave rested instead of depleted. Pre-travel acupuncture focuses on:

  • Lowering stress from the pre-trip rush

  • Supporting sleep before an early flight

  • Calming travel anxiety

  • Supporting digestion before a change in routine

After You Travel

Jet lag happens when your internal clock is out of sync with your new time zone. Post-travel acupuncture may help you:

  • Reset sleep and energy

  • Ease swelling and stiffness after long flights

  • Settle digestion

  • Recover faster from the overall strain of travel

If you fly often for work, building regular sessions into your schedule can help. Read our wellness guide for frequent travelers for more ideas.

What a Session Looks Like

Your Doctor of Acupuncture will ask about your recent or upcoming travel, your sleep, energy, digestion and any symptoms you are noticing. Treatment is relaxing and restorative, and you will leave with simple recommendations for sleep, hydration, light exposure and herbal support if applicable.

If you are already sick with a fever or contagious illness, please reschedule and rest. Acupuncture works best for prevention and recovery.
