Postpartum Acupuncture: Supporting Your Recovery After Birth
Author: Dr. Scott McFarlane, Director of Clinical Excellence, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
After birth, nearly all the attention turns to the baby. Your own recovery deserves care too.
The postpartum period is one of the most demanding transitions the body goes through. Hormones shift dramatically, sleep is fragmented, the body is healing from birth, and many new parents are feeding around the clock. It is common to feel depleted, emotional and not quite like yourself.
In Chinese Medicine, the weeks after birth have long been treated as a protected time for rest and rebuilding. Postpartum acupuncture brings that idea into modern care.
How Postpartum Acupuncture Can Help
Every recovery looks different, and your treatment is built around what you need. Patients commonly come to us for support with:
Fatigue and low energy
Sleep quality, even when sleep is short
Mood changes, stress and feeling overwhelmed
Back, neck and shoulder tension from feeding and carrying
Milk supply concerns, alongside guidance from a lactation consultant
Digestion and appetite
Night sweats and hormonal changes
Recovery after vaginal or cesarean birth, once cleared by your provider
Research on acupuncture after birth is still limited, so we see it as supportive care that works alongside your OB, midwife and pediatric team, not as a replacement.
A Note on Postpartum Mood
The baby blues are common in the first two weeks. If low mood, anxiety, intrusive thoughts or hopelessness last longer or feel intense, please reach out to your provider. Postpartum depression and anxiety are common and treatable. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call or text 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.
Acupuncture can be a calming part of your support system, and our team can help connect you with counseling and other care when you need more.
When to Start
Many patients begin in the first few weeks after birth, as soon as they feel ready to leave the house. After a cesarean birth or complicated delivery, check with your provider first. Some patients continue weekly or every-other-week sessions through the first few months, then shift to maintenance care.
What a Postpartum Session Looks Like
Your Doctor of Acupuncture will ask about your birth, your recovery so far, how you are sleeping and feeding, and how you are feeling emotionally. Treatment is gentle and restorative. You will be positioned for comfort, with extra support for a healing abdomen or tender back.
Depending on your needs, your practitioner may add gentle moxibustion, a warming therapy traditionally used after birth, along with simple recommendations for rest, nourishing food and herbal support if applicable.
