Prenatal Acupuncture: Gentle Support for Every Trimester
Author: Dr. Scott McFarlane, Director of Clinical Excellence, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
Pregnancy asks a lot of your body, and many of the usual remedies are off the table.
Nausea that lingers past the first trimester. A back and pelvis that ache by mid-afternoon. Sleep that gets harder to find just as you need it most. And underneath it all, the mental load of preparing for a new life.
Prenatal acupuncture offers gentle, drug-free support through each stage of pregnancy. It is one of the most meaningful kinds of care we provide.
Is Acupuncture Safe During Pregnancy?
When provided by a trained, licensed practitioner, acupuncture is considered a low-risk therapy during pregnancy. Your Doctor of Acupuncture adapts every treatment for pregnancy: certain points are avoided, positioning is adjusted for comfort as your body changes, and needle stimulation stays gentle.
We always recommend letting your OB or midwife know you are receiving acupuncture, and we are happy to coordinate with your care team.
First Trimester Support
The first trimester is often the hardest to talk about, because many people have not shared their news yet. Acupuncture may help with:
Nausea and morning sickness
Fatigue and low energy
Stress, anxiety and sleep changes
Headaches
Patients who have worked with us through fertility care often continue acupuncture into early pregnancy for added support during this transition.
Second Trimester Support
As your body grows, so do the physical demands. In the second trimester, patients often come in for:
Low back, hip and pelvic girdle pain
Sciatica
Heartburn and digestive changes
Swelling in the hands and feet
Restless sleep
Third Trimester and Birth Preparation
In the final weeks, acupuncture focuses on comfort and preparing the body for birth. Common goals include:
Easing back, pelvic and rib discomfort
Supporting rest and calming the nervous system before labor
Pre-birth treatments, often weekly from around 36 weeks
Moxibustion, a gentle warming therapy traditionally used when a baby is in a breech position, ideally discussed with your provider around 32 to 35 weeks
Research on acupuncture in pregnancy is still growing. Studies suggest it may help with nausea, pelvic and back pain, and in the case of moxibustion, encouraging a breech baby to turn. We are always clear about what the evidence supports and what it does not.
What a Prenatal Session Looks Like
Your Doctor of Acupuncture will ask how far along you are, how you are feeling, and what you need most right now. You will be positioned comfortably on your side or reclined with supportive pillows, never flat on your stomach. Sessions are calm and unhurried: an hour set aside just for you.
Prenatal massage pairs well with acupuncture. You can learn more in our guide to prenatal massage. For more on emotional support during pregnancy, read how prenatal acupuncture can help with anxiety and mood swings.
When to Call Your OB or Midwife
Acupuncture is supportive care and does not replace prenatal medical care. Contact your OB or midwife right away for bleeding, severe pain, fluid leaking, reduced fetal movement, severe headaches or vision changes.
