Acupuncture for Back, Neck and Joint Pain: How It Supports Relief and Recovery
Author: Dr. Scott McFarlane, Director of Clinical Excellence, Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
Pain changes how you move, how you sleep and how much patience you have left at the end of the day.
Back pain that flares every time you sit for too long. A stiff neck that turns every drive into a shoulder check. A knee or hip that limits the walks, runs and workouts that used to keep you feeling like yourself. When pain lingers, it stops being just a physical problem and starts shaping your whole week.
Acupuncture is one of the most researched non-drug approaches to pain, and it is one of the most common reasons our patients come to see us.
Why Pain Lingers
Most pain starts with something specific: an injury, a long stretch of poor posture, a new training load, or simple wear and tear. Over time, the body adapts around it. Muscles guard the area, circulation changes, movement patterns shift, and the nervous system can become more sensitive to signals it would normally ignore.
That is why pain often outlasts the original injury, and why treating only the spot that hurts does not always solve the problem.
How Acupuncture Supports Pain Relief
Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles placed at specific points on the body. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, pain reflects areas where the flow of qi and blood has become restricted. From a modern physiological perspective, research suggests acupuncture may:
Influence how the nervous system processes pain signals
Encourage the release of the body's own pain-relieving chemicals, including endorphins
Improve local circulation to tight or injured tissue
Release muscle tension and active trigger points
Calm the stress response that often amplifies pain
Large reviews of acupuncture for chronic back, neck and osteoarthritis pain have found it more effective than no treatment, and the American College of Physicians includes acupuncture among its recommended first-line, non-drug options for chronic low back pain.
Common Types of Pain We See
Patients come to us for a wide range of pain concerns, including:
Low back pain and sciatica
Neck and shoulder tension
Headaches and migraines
Knee, hip and other joint pain
Jaw tension and TMJ discomfort
Repetitive strain from desk work, training or manual labor
Post-injury and post-surgical recovery, once cleared by your surgeon

What a Pain-Focused Session Looks Like
Your Doctor of Acupuncture starts by listening. Where is the pain, when did it start, what makes it better or worse, and how is it affecting your sleep, work and movement? They will also look at the bigger picture, because stress, sleep, digestion and inflammation all influence how the body experiences pain.
Treatment usually combines points near the area of pain with points elsewhere on the body that support circulation, the nervous system and recovery. Depending on what you need, your practitioner may also include:
Fire cupping to release tight fascia and improve circulation
Gua sha to ease muscle tension
Electro-acupuncture, a gentle current between needles, for stubborn areas
Heat therapy and targeted stretches to continue at home
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
Every case is different. Recent, acute pain often responds within a few sessions. Chronic pain that has been building for months or years usually benefits from a short series of weekly visits, followed by maintenance care as you improve. Your practitioner will share a recommended plan after your first visit and adjust it as you go.
When to See a Medical Provider First
Acupuncture works well alongside conventional care. Seek medical evaluation first if your pain follows a significant fall or accident, comes with numbness, weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control, or is accompanied by fever or unexplained weight loss. Our collaborative care model means your acupuncturist can also coordinate with our Naturopathic Doctors and other Licensed Providers when a fuller workup makes sense.
