The Annual Integrative Physical: Why We Benchmark Your Health Every Year

Author: Dr. Alexander Aponte-Davila, Naturopathic Doctor and Nutritionist

Most people walk out of a routine physical with one of two answers: something is wrong, or everything looks normal. But “normal” is a wide range, and it rarely tells you where your health is heading.

That is why we built the Integrative Physical as a benchmark rather than a one-time snapshot. Your first visit sets your baseline. Every year after that, the Annual Integrative Physical measures you against it, so you can see what is improving, catch early shifts before they become problems and keep dialing in your care.

What Happens in the Two-Hour Integrative Physical

The Integrative Physical is a two-hour visit with your Doctor. It is closer to an executive health assessment than a standard checkup, and it is built around prevention.

  • A hands-on physical exam. About 45 minutes covering height, weight and BMI, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation, and a head-to-toe exam that includes your thyroid and lymph nodes, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, nervous system, skin and mood.

  • Body composition and function. Body fat percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass and metabolic age, plus grip strength and waist circumference. These are practical markers of metabolic health and healthy aging, and they are easy to track year over year.

  • Your full history, connected. A detailed review across 13 body systems, along with your medical, family and social history, so patterns that never surface in a 15-minute appointment get noticed.

  • An integrative assessment. Your Doctor brings everything together across mood and cognition, metabolic risk, hormonal patterns, nutrient status and Chinese Medicine patterns to look for what may be driving how you feel.

  • Your initial plan. You leave with prioritized next steps. Depending on what we find, that may include lab orders, referrals, supplements or herbal formulas, and support for nutrition, hydration, sleep, movement and your nervous system.

Biomarkers: The Data Behind Your Baseline

Most patients pair the physical with The Saffron Panel, functional blood work with more than 70 biomarkers. It gives your Doctor a detailed picture of areas like metabolic health, inflammation, hormones, thyroid function and nutrient status.

Once your results are in, your Doctor reviews all of your lab results and creates your 30-page Holistic Health Plan. We then walk through it together in plain language, so you understand what each finding may mean and exactly what we suggest next. If you want to know which markers matter most, our annual bloodwork checklist is a good place to start.

Why We Benchmark Every Year

A single set of results tells you where you are today. Two or more sets, measured the same way, tell you which direction you are moving. That trend is often more useful than any single number.

Each year, the Annual Integrative Physical repeats the full exam and body composition and re-tests your biomarkers against your baseline. That lets us:

  • Spot early shifts. A marker drifting in the wrong direction, even within the normal range, is a signal to act early rather than wait for a diagnosis.

  • Measure what is working. Changes to nutrition, sleep, training, supplements or herbal formulas should show up in your data. If they do not, we adjust.

  • Focus on prevention. Family history, metabolic risk and hormonal changes are easier to address when you can see them developing year over year.

  • Dial in your care. Your plan for the year ahead is built on your own numbers, not general guidelines alone.

The Saffron Method: Test, Plan, Support, Re-test

The Integrative Physical is the first step in what we call the Saffron Method. We test to set your baseline, build a plan around what we find, support you through the year with check-ins and integrative care, then re-test at your Annual Integrative Physical to see how far you have come.

Between annual visits, most patients book a Holistic Health Check-in about every 90 days to review progress and adjust the plan. Your care team, including our Doctors of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and other Licensed Providers, plans around the same findings, so everyone is working toward the same goals.

Is the Integrative Physical Right for You?

It is a strong fit if you feel “fine” on paper but sense something is off, if you have a family history you want to understand, if it has been years since a thorough physical, or if you simply want a data-driven plan for the next decade of your health. Keep your primary care Doctor for acute illness and routine screenings; with your permission, we coordinate with them and share results.
