Holistic skincare in San Diego: clean products, clinical thinking

A good facial is part skincare, part bodywork. Maybe your skin feels congested, dry or easily irritated. Maybe you clench your jaw all day and your face feels tired. Or maybe you just want an hour of quiet, careful attention that you can’t give yourself at home.

At Saffron & Sage, our esthetician and practitioners use our own plant-based skincare line, and they work in the same clinic as our acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors and medical team. Your facial can fit around the rest of your care, and we never upcharge for add-ons like essential oils.

Why people in San Diego book a holistic facial

These are the reasons we hear most from people across San Diego, from Little Italy and Downtown to Hillcrest, Mission Hills and La Jolla. Your practitioner will look at your skin, ask what is going on and suggest the session that fits.

What is a holistic facial?

Using a gua sha stone at home

A holistic facial combines skincare with hands-on bodywork for the face, head and neck. Alongside cleansing, exfoliation and hydration, your practitioner works on the muscles and tissue that hold tension in your face.

Our menu falls into two families. Steam and Clean facials focus on the skin itself: a deep cleanse, steam, extractions and tools such as high frequency and microcurrent, followed by our serums and moisturizers. Facial Therapy treatments focus on the face as bodywork: hot towels, our five-step skincare ritual, then techniques like buccal massage, gua sha, facial cupping or lymphatic drainage.

We don’t make promises about results, and we don’t show before and after photos. Everyone’s skin is different, and it changes with sleep, stress, hormones, sun and season. Your practitioner will be straight with you about what a facial can reasonably do, and when a skin concern should be seen by a doctor first.

How skincare fits into integrative care here

At Saffron & Sage, a facial isn’t a one-off spa hour. If you are a member, your practitioner can see the rest of your plan. When skin concerns seem connected to something bigger, like digestion, stress or hormones, our naturopathic doctors and medical team are down the hall.

Many members pair a facial with acupuncture or massage, or add fire cupping for the back and shoulders. Either way, you leave with simple home-care suggestions, not a cabinet of products you have to buy.

What to expect, and how we keep it comfortable

You rest on a warm, padded table under a blanket, with your hair wrapped back. Your practitioner explains each step before it happens. Extractions are only done if needed and with your OK, and you can ask to skip any step or tool at any point.

Most facials feel calm and relaxing. Extractions and peels can tingle or feel a little intense for a moment, and buccal massage involves gentle work inside the cheek with a gloved hand. Afterward, skip makeup for the rest of the day if you can, use sunscreen, and go easy on strong actives for a day or two.

Have sensitive skin?

If you react easily, ask about:

  • Sooth and Repair (gua sha and facial massage)
  • Lymphatic drainage facial (light, rhythmic, calming)
  • A custom facial with no extractions or peel
  • Eczema-prone skin sessions with gentle, sugarcane-based exfoliation

Tips from our holistic esthetician →

Your first facial appointment, step by step

  1. Before you arrive. Come with clean skin or light makeup. Pause retinoids and strong exfoliants for a few days before a peel or microneedling. Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early for your first visit.
  2. Intake. Your practitioner asks about your skin history, products you use, medications (including acne medications and blood thinners), allergies, pregnancy and what you want from the session.
  3. The session. A deep cleanse, then steam, extractions, massage, tools or a mask, depending on the facial you booked and what your skin needs that day.
  4. After. Your practitioner suggests simple home care and a timeline for your next visit, and may suggest another service, such as acupuncture.
  5. How often. Many people come monthly, in step with the skin’s natural renewal cycle. Some come more often for a short stretch. You decide.

How much does a facial cost? Two ways to start

Your first visit is where the relationship starts. A first appointment runs much like any other: a short intake, your session, and a few minutes at the end to talk about what comes next. If you add a consultation, your practitioner takes a fuller history and reviews your labs, if you have them. Pick the way in that suits you.

Holistic facial and skincare FAQs

How much does a facial cost in San Diego at Saffron & Sage?

New patients can book a first visit and consultation together for $300, normally $600, or a first appointment for $250, normally $300. After that, members use monthly credits: most facials use one or two non-medical credits, and microneedling uses three medical credits.

Which facial should I book?

For congested or oily skin, Steam and Clean. For breakouts, the Acne Facial. For jaw tension, Buccal. For puffiness, Lymphatic Drainage. For sensitive skin, Sooth and Repair. For a first facial, a Custom Facial lets your practitioner decide on the day. Still unsure? A free discovery call takes the guesswork out.

What makes a facial holistic?

We use our own plant-based skincare line and treat the face as bodywork, not just skin. Each session includes massage for the face, head and neck, and your practitioner can coordinate with our acupuncturists and doctors when skin concerns seem connected to something bigger.

Do facials hurt?

Most feel relaxing. Extractions, peels and buccal massage can feel intense for a moment. Your practitioner explains each step, and you can ask to skip anything.

Will my skin be red afterward?

Some people look a little flushed for an hour or two, especially after extractions or a peel. Microneedling leaves skin pink for a day or so. Plan important photos or events a few days out.

How often should I get a facial?

Many people come monthly, roughly in step with the skin’s renewal cycle. Your practitioner will make a suggestion, and you decide.

Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is a medical service here and is only offered after an assessment. It isn’t right for everyone, for example during pregnancy, with active infections or breakouts in the area, with some medications, or if you scar easily. Tell us about your health history and your practitioner will advise.

Can I get a facial while pregnant?

Many of our facials can be adapted for pregnancy, with gentler products and positioning. We don’t offer microneedling or certain peels during pregnancy. Tell us at booking.

Can a facial help with eczema, psoriasis or rosacea?

Our sessions for eczema-prone skin and psoriasis are gentle comfort treatments that focus on hydration and soothing touch. They don’t replace care from a dermatologist or doctor, and our medical team can help if you want a fuller look at what’s going on.

What should I avoid before a facial?

Skip retinoids, strong acids and waxing on the face for a few days before a peel or microneedling, and avoid a sunburn. Tell us about any acne medications or recent cosmetic procedures.

What is buccal facial massage?

A face and jaw massage that includes gentle work inside the cheek with a gloved hand. People often book it for jaw clenching and facial tension.

Is a facial covered by insurance or HSA?

We’re a direct pay clinic and don’t bill insurance. Cosmetic facials usually aren’t HSA or FSA eligible, though LSA dollars and some medical skin services may be. Check with your plan administrator.

Do I need to be a member?

No. You can start with a first visit or a free discovery call, then decide whether membership makes sense for you.

Where are you located?

2555 State St, San Diego, CA 92101, just north of Little Italy.
