Winter Wellness with Sol-ti Recap
In winter, it is important to conserve energy, create warmth in the body, and indulge in rest after the longer, warmer months. During the first half of this gathering, Terra expressed the benefits of utilizing warm foods, like cooked whole grain and beans. Because the element of winter is water, it was also suggested to channel this element with food from the ocean like seaweed and seasonal fish.
Adding ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne are great for creating additional heat. Sol-ti had Gingermade on hand for participants to try, illustrating how easy it can be to add ginger into your day.
Before delving into the restorative yoga session, Terra detailed the deeper significance of yoga during this time of year. In winter, there is an emphasis on the bladder and kidneys; the energy channels for both run along the sides of the spine, which is why this season also focuses on the spine and joints. It is important to keep your back energy loose and flowing to avoid stiffness as well as neck and back pains.
Fear is the emotion associated with the water element, and so with winter as well. To work on trusting our own bodies, Terra suggests balancing poses, like half moon pose shown below, to open ourselves up to fear and find trust within ourselves.
As the season comes to an end, we encourage you to take the time to practice self care that speaks to the yin energy of winter. This can be as simple as hydrating with organic beverages like those at Sol-ti, resting the body in child's pose, and meditating.
