Dry Brushing 101

When it comes to skin care, we tend to focus on two major things: moisturizing and exfoliation. We take care of ourselves by putting lotion and sunscreen on year round and using various cleansers on our skin.

But why do we stop at these skin boosting steps? Our skin is our largest organ, and it is also the most exposed to the elements and therefore to toxins around us. Because of this, we should consider methods to help our skin become as healthy as it can. A wonderful way to take care of our skin and combat toxicity is through dry brushing. 


Dry brushing is an easy, healthy and affordable way to take another measure of skin care. It involves nothing more than a stiff bristled brush and some specific brush movements. 

There are many benefits to dry brushing. First and foremost, dry brushing is used as an exfoliation method. The movements of the bristles move aside dead skin cells and boost the creation of new skin cells.  Along with this, it can also clear clogged pores and eliminate ingrown hairs. This will ensure the skin becoming smoother and brighter. The elimination of clogged pores can also help your skin absorb natural vitamins, like Vitamin D, from the environment. This can help your body and mind feel better. 

Dry brushing is also known as a toxin eliminator in that it is good for the circulatory system and can help your body to eliminate metabolic waste working alongside the liver and your body’s natural toxin elimination systems. 

So where do you begin? Luckily, dry brushing is easy and inexpensive making it a wonderful addition to your daily regimen. The first thing to do is find a dry brush. The stiffer the bristles, the more effective the brushing will be. 

Make sure that your skin is dry when you start brushing. The idea is to move towards your heart, so it is advised to start with small circular motions, and then graduate to smoother, longer strokes as you work up your legs. Be gentle with your skin, and if there is any inflammation or broken skin, stop to avoid pain or infection. 

After you finish mindfully and gently brushing your whole body, take a nice shower to sooth your skin and wash away the dead skin cells you have loosened from your skin. Try alternating between cold and hot water; this will stimulate blood circulation, further promoting the positive aspects of dry brushing. 

Practice this for the next thirty days and changes in your skin will definitely shine through, showcasing a healthier version of you!
